FICS:WINBOARD TUTORIAL

Playing chess at Free Internet Chess Server (FICS) is fantastic! It's better than Yahoo chess, MSN chess and ICC. Here are the benefits you can receive:
* It's FREE!
* The competition is better at FICS than at any other chess site
* You can customize your chess environment (chess board, pieces, etc...) to fit your needs
* Many more benefits, see Ed Collins, Tribute to Winboard

Getting started with FICS is not hard, it's very easy...you just need to follow the step by step process that we've outlined below:

1. Go to the FICS registration page

2. Follow their instructions and you will receive your FICS ACTIVATION CODE AND PASSWORD via email.

3. Download WINBOARD and install it to your computer. Winboard will be used as your online chess set.

4. At the lower left of your screen, click START - PROGRAMS - WINBOARD (your screen should look something like this: see graphic below)

5. Select CHESS SERVER - freechess.org: from the menu

6. Two windows will now pop up on your screen (ICS Interaction and Winboard: freechess.org). You will login and challenge other players through the ICS Interaction window and play your games in the Winboard: freechess.org window.

7. Go to the ICS Interaction window and enter in your username then enter in your password to login.

8. Now that you are logged in, see the QUICK START COMMANDS and examples area (below) so that you can challenge someone or accept a challenge.

QUICK START COMMANDS and Examples

1. PASSWORD old new: This command will change your password. If your old password was 'staple' and your new password is 'plastic' the command would be: Password staple plastic

2. PLAY 31: This command accepts the challenge from the player at Table 31.

3. SEEK 3 0: This command puts out a challenge from you to other players that you want to play a game with 3 minutes and Zero seconds.

4. SEEK 4 2 r: This command puts out a challenge from you to other players that you want to play a game with 4 minutes and 2 seconds that is a rated game.

5. SEEK 2 3 r w: This command puts out a challenge from you to other players that you want to play a game with 2 minutes and 3 seconds that is a rated game and you want to play as the white pieces.
